The Regional Tour of 2022 Archibald Finalists continues. The exhibition, including Noel McKenna‘s work, is now at Blue Mountains Cultural Centre.

Noel McKenna’s Archibald Prize finalist portrait of Patrick Corrigan AM, with Rosie (above) features businessman, art collector and generous benefactor Patrick Corrigan. He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2000 for service to the visual arts, particularly in philanthropy. McKenna noted that “Pat is a good friend and a supporter of many artists. He lives near me and often drops by for a cup of tea and biscuits. He was born in China and has had a very interesting life, so he is always good to spend time with”. Here his is depicted with McKenna’s dog Rosie.

Beating about the bush: a new lens on Australian Impressionism, the current exhibition at Art Gallery of Ballarat pairs work by female photographers who have re-examined the Australian landscape with works drawn from the gallery’s collection of Australian Impressionist landscape paintings. The exhibition features work by both Dianne Jones and Fiona Foley.

Artist Profile: Ken Whisson

Frost notes that “From his emergence in the mid-twentieth century, Whisson related to his audience not as compatriots in need of a national story, but as human beings capable of refashioning their own perception and, he hoped, transforming the structures of society.”

Melbourne Now: Julia Ciccarone

We are delighted to announce that Julia Ciccarone will present a brand new installation as part of Melbourne Now in 2023.  

Ten years after the inaugural Melbourne Now exhibition, the National Gallery of Victoria will open the second edition of the bold and unprecedented survey. Brand new paintings, as well as a magnified rendering of Ciccarone’s work will feature in the Australian Impressionist room at the The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square as part of the exciting exhibition.  

National Gallery of Victoria director Tony Ellwood AM has described Melbourne Now as a “showstopping and dynamic survey”. This groundbreaking exhibition brings together more than 200 Victorian artists and designers.

Jennifer Joseph shortlisted for the Paul Guest Prize

Congratulations Jennifer Joseph on being shortlisted for the Paul Guest Prize 2022. This biennial non-acquisitive prize celebrates contemporary drawing practice in Australia. The prize was initiated by former Family Court Judge and Olympic rower, The Honourable Paul Guest OAM QC. The winner will be announced at the opening of an exhibition of the finalists’ work in August.

Jennifer Joseph made this statement about her shortlisted work: My art is not about anything other than what is to be discovered in the materials I’m using and the process of art-making. Paradoxically however, my concern is with the ephemeral nature of existence itself. Life, death, and the process of change. I do not plan my work, so as not to limit its organic potential. My art is born in the act of making, and as in this example, it’s often my intention to reveal this process in the finished work. I’m fascinated by what happens when ink poured on paper merges with it to become something else. Or what occurs when rags used in the painting process become part of the artwork itself. The linear markings applied with urgency and partially erased or scribbled over, almost like the markings on a blackboard, are drawn from deep within the artist’s psyche. As in life, it’s all about the process.

Fiona Foley Veiled Paradise at McClelland

Niagara Galleries is pleased to announce that important Badtjala artist Fiona Foley’s major solo exhibition Veiled Paradise is now open at McClelland.

Fiona Foley: Veiled Paradise brings together work from Foley’s nearly forty-year career in this comprehensive exhibition. Foley’s work is informed by her ancestral connection to K’gari/Fraser Island, drawing equally upon its serene beauty and the history of systemic violence and sexual exploitation perpetrated on its shores. The exhibition is on tour from QUT Art Museum, Brisbane, where it was shown in 2021.
