Artist Spotlight: Brenda L. Croft

Brenda L. Croft has a number of upcoming projects including an exhibition and projection project with Sydney Festival in January 2023. In Dyin Nura (Women’s Place), commanding portraits by Croft will be projected across Old Government House, Parramatta. Supported by Lendlease, evenings of music and performance will feature from the 19-22 January. In addition, Croft’s exhibition Naabami (thou shall/will see): Barangaroo (army of me), will feature on the headland at Barangaroo from 5-29 January and at The National 4, at Art Gallery of New South Wales.

In addition, Brenda L. Croft’s work also features in the 20th-Century galleries Rehang exhibition at Art Gallery of New South Wales and the nationally touring exhibition Still in my mind: Gurindji location is currently on at The Drill Hall Gallery, ANU. A range of public programs will be held at The Drill Hall Gallery from the 13-14 December 2022. Details can be found here.

Brenda L. Croft has been named as the 2023 – 2024 Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University, USA. Professor Croft will be the first First Nations woman academic to take up the prestigious position at Harvard. Read more here.

Rubaba Haider in wHole at Heide Museum of Modern Art

Drawing together a diverse range of artworks by contemporary Australian artists, the upcoming exhibition wHole at Heide Museum of Modern Art features work by Rubaba Haider. Curated by Melissa Keys, the exhibition explores a range of works that display an interest in the phenomena of openings and absences and an underlying desire of completeness. Alongside Rubaba Haider, exhibition artists include: Rushdi Anwar, Kushana Bush, Consuelo Cavaniglia, Lucio Fontana, Mira Gojak, Robert Jacks, Anish Kapoor, Titus Kaphar, Lindy Lee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Noriko Nakamura, S.J Norman, Rosslynd Piggott, Norma Redpath and Ricky Swallow.

Artist Spotlight: Stephen Benwell

Stephen Benwell‘s work features in a number of current exhibitions nationally. His work was shortlisted for the Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize and an exhibition of the 49 finalists’ work is currently showing at Woollahra Gallery. ⁠Voting for the Viewer’s Choice Award is open until Sunday, 20 November. Vote here.  

Thinking Through Pink, opening next month at Wollongong Art Gallery also features Benwell’s work. The exhibition, described as a contemplation on the politics and pleasures of colour, is curated by Dr Sally Gray and includes works from the Wollongong Art Gallery collection; decorative arts from the Powerhouse collection, Sydney; posters from the archives of second-wave feminist artists Jan Fieldsend and Marie McMahon and works by invited contemporary artists.

In addition, Stephen Benwell’s work is included in the exhibition The Sun at Midnight, currently at The Hellenic Museum, Melbourne. The exhibition features work by five contemporary artists, including Benwell and reflects the continuing influence of Greek classicism. Tai Snaith reviewed the exhibition on RRR. Clay Dynasty at Powerhouse Museum celebrates studio ceramics in Australia and features works from the 1960s through to the present day. The exhibition features more than 400 objects from the Powerhouse’s significant ceramics collection, including works by Stephen Benwell and Angela Brennan.

Powerhouse: Sangeeta Sandrasegar

Sangeeta Sandrasegar‘s work features ⁠in the exhibition Charkha and Kargha at Powerhouse Museum. Taking its title from cross-cultural words charkha (spinning wheel) and kargha (loom), the exhibition features 100 rare and unseen objects, exploring the tools and crafts employed in Indian textile design and production.⁠ Sangeeta Sandrasegar’s work in the exhibition What falls from view, 2019, features Khadi and silk pieces, hand-dyed in Indian indigo and Australian native cherry.

In addition, Sandrasegar’s work will feature in the 2023 Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present. More than 150 artists from diverse cultures will be represented, accompanied by a programme of film, music and performance.

Opening at Gippsland Art Gallery on the 3rd of December, Kevin Lincoln: Evoking Gippsland features paintings and drawings, including some bound in the artist’s travel books, spanning a period of forty years.

Artist Spotlight: Euan Macleod

Euan Macleod‘s work features in a number of current exhibitions, including Euan Macleod and Rodney Pople: 2° at Western Plains Cultural Centre, Dubbo, New South Wales; an exhibition of collaborative works with Gregory O’Brien entitled Local Knowledge at Ashburton Art Gallery, Ashburton, New Zealand; and a group exhibition entitled WrestleMANIA at Rockhampton Art Gallery, Rockhampton, Queensland.

Euan Macleod and Rodney Pople: 2° at Western Plains Cultural Centre is a two person exhibition and the result of artistic residencies the two artists undertook in 2021. Large scale paintings, based on observations of people and animals in Zoos, feature in this exhibition.

Local Knowledge at Ashburton Art Gallery features an ongoing series of collaborative works on canvas and paper, which began when Gregory O’Brien was writing a monograph on Euan Macleod.

A group exhibition at Rockhampton Art Gallery entitled WrestleMANIA brings together work by twenty contemporary sculptors, painters, cartoonists and new media artists who have all responded to the sport and theatre of wrestling.

Artist Spotlight: Steven Rendall

Steven Rendall‘s work is showing in a current and an upcoming exhibition, both in Brunswick, Melbourne. The Merri-bek Summer Show at The Counihan Gallery reflects the recent renaming of Moreland City Council to Merri-bek, meaning ‘rocky country’ in Woi-wurrung language. Rendall’s work will also feature in A Digital Aesthetic at Sandbox Studios, curated by Sue Beyer, opening next month.
