Congratulations Deborah Halpern, finalist in the inaugural Maquette: Sculpture Award at McClelland Sculpture Park + Gallery. This exciting new prize showcases 62 small-scale sculptures (no more than 50cm in any dimension) by leading contemporary Australian artists, selected by artist Lisa Roet and McClelland’s Artistic and Executive Director Lisa Byrne.

Commissioned and presented by Fed Square, with the Australian Tapestry Workshop, a new site-specific textile installation by Sangeeta Sandrasegar will be unveiled in the Atrium at Fed Square this Saturday, 13 September. Entitled I ragazzi dei millefiori: the flow’rs of song and story, this latest work continues Sangeeta Sandrasegar’s collaboration with natural dying expert Heather Thomas.

Join Sangeeta Sandrasegar and Heather Thomas on Saturday, 13 September from 11am to hear about the ideas behind the work and the process of using plants to hand dye fabric.

A selection of images from Brenda L. Croft‘s series Naabámi (thou shall/will see): Barangaroo (army of me) is currently showing in On Country: Photography from Australia at the prestigious festival Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles, France. This major exhibition is curated by PHOTO Australia’s Elias Redstone, Pippa Milne and Brendan McCleary, with First Nations curator Kimberley Moulton and highlights the work of twenty Australian artists.

Croft appeared in a panel discussion entitled Photography: Rethinking the Archive in Arles last month. Watch the discussion, led by curator Kimberley Moulton with photographers Sonja Carmichael, Maree Clarke and Brenda L Croft here.

Fiona Foley: ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Fiona Foley‘s work features in the exhibition Taking Back Language at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre. Curated by Sarah Werkmeister and Katie Ryan, Taking Back Language showcases a selection of works by acclaimed Aboriginal artists who engage with text to reclaim language.

Featuring work by Fiona Foley, Gladys Milroy, Margaret Morgan and Edith Trethowan, the exhibition Place Makers at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery features new and loaned works alongside holdings from the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art. Place Makers draws attention to the work of four exceptional artists whose work is grounded in relationships of place and community.

Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery: Helen Wright

Helen Wright is the subject of an exciting exhibition at The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) opening in August. Presented by QVMAG and the City of Launceston Shapeshifting: The Art of Helen Wright celebrates one of Tasmania’s most enduringly vital and visionary artists.

Spanning over four decades of the artist’s practice, Shapeshifting features painting, drawing, printmaking and sculpture by Helen Wright, who works across a number of mediums and scales.

At once intimate and expansive, Helen Wright’s art resists containment and rewards our own deeper interrogations. Shapeshifting is a testament to Wright’s enduring contribution to Australian art, and to the power of art as both container for ideas and catalyst for change. Courtesy of QVMAG.

SHAPESHIFTING: Helen Wright features 92 illustrated works completed over four decades, from early small mono lithographs, large pastel, charcoal, graphite and coloured pencil drawings, watercolour and pearlescent oil paintings through to sculptures cast in resin, bronze and concrete. Written texts include a Foreword by artist and lead curator at Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Dr Kellie Wells, an essay titled ‘A Curious Gaze’ by arts writer and broadcaster Courtney Kidd and an Afterword from Helen herself that reflects on her ‘shapeshifting’ career.
