Sharjah Biennial 15: Thinking Historically in the Present features works by more than 150 artists from across the globe, including Sangeeta Sandrasegar. Sandrasegar’s new body of work On the field of Truth, on the battlefield of life IV, 2022 was unveiled as part of the opening week events last week.

Rubaba Haider in wHole at Heide Museum of Modern Art

Drawing together a diverse range of artworks by contemporary Australian artists, the current exhibition wHole at Heide Museum of Modern Art features work by Rubaba Haider. Curated by Melissa Keys, the exhibition explores a range of works that display an interest in the phenomena of openings and absences and an underlying desire for completeness.

Alongside Rubaba Haider, exhibiting artists include: Rushdi Anwar, Kushana Bush, Consuelo Cavaniglia, Lucio Fontana, Mira Gojak, Robert Jacks, Anish Kapoor, Titus Kaphar, Lindy Lee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Noriko Nakamura, S.J Norman, Rosslynd Piggott, Norma Redpath and Ricky Swallow.

Artist Spotlight: Stephen Benwell

Stephen Benwell‘s work features in two current exhibitions in New South Wales, as well as an upcoming exhibition at Bundanon Art Museum. Thinking Through Pink at Wollongong Art Gallery is curated by Dr Sally Gray and includes works from the Wollongong Art Gallery collection; decorative arts from the Powerhouse collection, Sydney; posters from the archives of second-wave feminist artists Jan Fieldsend and Marie McMahon and works by invited contemporary artists.

Clay Dynasty at Powerhouse Museum celebrates studio ceramics in Australia and features works from the 1960s through to the present day. The exhibition features more than 400 objects from the Powerhouse’s significant ceramics collection, including works by Stephen Benwell and Angela Brennan.

The upcoming exhibition Fantastic Forms celebrates Bundanon’s 30th Anniversary. Curated by Boe-Lin Bastian and Sophie O’Brien, Fantastic forms features ceramics, sculpture and animation, and brings together new commissions by three contemporary Australian artists, Nabilah Nordin, Stephen Benwell and Rubyrose Bancroft, with Bundanon’s expansive collection of drawings by artist William Merric Boyd (1888 –1959), Arthur Boyd’s father.

Artist Spotlight: Brenda L. Croft

Brenda L. Croft has received attention from a number of journalists and publications for her exhibition and projections Naabami (thou shall/will see): Barangaroo (army of me) and Dyin Nura (Women’s Place), which featured in Sydney Festival last month. Croft featured in several articles in The Sydney Morning Herald, as well as on SBS World News, NITV, in The Age, Koori Mail, Indesign LiveHabitus LivingThe Art GuideArt Almanac and National Indigenous Times. In addition, a ten minute interview with Croft aired on 2ser, and Art Collector published an extensive article in their latest issue, which includes an interview with Croft, about her career and her Sydney Festival projects. Following this, Sydney’s largest biennial survey of contemporary Australian Art, The National 4 will feature work by Brenda L. Croft. The biennial will be held across four sites: Art Gallery of NSW, Carriageworks, MCA Australia and Campbelltown Art Centre and will include 53 artists and collectives

In addition, Brenda L. Croft’s work is now showing in the 20th-Century galleries Rehang exhibition at Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Later this year Brenda L. Croft commences her tenure as the 2023 – 2024 Gough Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University, USA. Professor Croft will be the first First Nations woman academic to take up the prestigious position at Harvard. Read more here.

Artist Spotlight: Kevin Lincoln

Kevin Lincoln: Evoking Gippsland closes at Gippsland Art Gallery this week. This must-see exhibition features paintings and drawings by Kevin Lincoln, including some bound in the artist’s travel books, spanning a period of forty years. Subjects range from Wilsons Promontory, Tenby Point, Wattle Point, Lindenow, Kilcunda, and Grantville, Mitchell River, Powlett River, and the rolling hills of South Gippsland.

In addition, Kevin Lincoln features in the October 2022 issue of Art Collector. ‘A Monumental Presence’, written by John McDonald explores Lincoln’s early career and his latest work. Order your copy here.

Artist Spotlight: Helen Maudsley

The current exhibition housed in Bolton Court in Bendigo Art Gallery features abstract art spanning from the 1930s to the present day. Included in the exhibition is work by Helen Maudsley (pictured above with two works by Kate Tucker), alongside work by a number of important Australian artists including Richard Larter, Jenny Watson and Robert Jacks.

Against The Odds at Art Gallery of WA celebrates the work of women artists held in the State Art Collection, focusing on art made in the 1950s. Prompted by the recent purchase of a significant early painting by Helen Maudsley, Against The Odds includes works by thirty-two artists, working across all media.

In addition, Monash University Museum of Art has announced the artists whose work will be included in the upcoming exhibition Thin Skin, including paintings by Helen Maudsley. Curated by Australian, London-based writer, curator and former editor of frieze magazine, Jennifer Higgie, Thin Skin will feature works by more than thirty artists from Australia and overseas who explore the liminal space between figuration and abstraction.
