Sean Meilak is an artist living and working in Naarm/Melbourne, Australia. His practice spans sculpture, installation, painting, drawing and art in the public realm. He is interested in the relationship between people and the spaces and places they inhabit. Meilak’s work layers personal and collective histories, his pan-Mediterranean ancestry and queer identity, referencing a wide range of aesthetic movements from classical architecture to modernist design, and the theatrical environments in cinema building a language of abstract and architectural forms that draw connections across time and place to create new narratives and intersections.

Born in 1975, Meilak completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at the Victorian College of the Arts in 1997 and acted as Co-Director and Programme Co-ordinator of 1st Floor Artists’ and Writers’ Space, 1998-2002. From 2000 – 2002 he was a studio artist at Gertrude Contemporary Art Spaces and in 2006 he undertook a Australia Council for the Arts residency at the Cité International des Arts in Paris.
